Leekes Llantrisant store reopens following fire

Family-owned furnishings retailer Leekes has announced the reopening of its Llantrisant store after a fire broke out at the premises.

The store, which is situated near Talbot Green, Rhondda Cynon Taf, saw four crews sent to its location around 2:30 Friday morning (4 April) after the blaze destroyed two buildings belonging to the business.

“Last night our Llantrisant store was affected by a fire in one of the outbuildings behind the store,” the company said in a statement. “Thanks to the work of the excellent South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, the fire was brought under control quickly before it spread to the main store.

“We have some work to do in some areas of the store to clear water but anticipate that we will be ready to reopen by midday today.”

Around 60 firefighters, an aerial ladder platform, three water bowsers and an incident command unit were used to tackle the blaze, with crews from Pontyclun, Pontypridd, Pencoed, Cowbridge, Whitchurch, Cardiff Central, Barry, Kenfig Hill, Caerphilly, Tonypandy, Ely, Bridgend and Aberdare all attending the scene.

The fire was brought under control around 5am and Leekes has now announced the reopening of the store.

“We are pleased to let you know that after last night’s fire, Leekes Llantrisant has now reopened for our customers,” the retailer added. “We would like to thank South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and their partners for their amazing work last night in containing the fire to two ancillary buildings at the rear of the store preventing it spreading into the store.

“We would also like to acknowledge the excellent work of our Llantrisant store & support teams who have worked quickly and efficiently this morning to ensure our store can reopen safely.

“We look forward to welcoming back our customers to our store and feel incredibly lucky that the situation was so well managed. Thank you for your ongoing support.”

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and South Wales Police has launched a joint investigation into the cause of the fire.
