Homeware high street sales still down in early April

Homeware sales fell on the high street for a fifth straight week.

According to the latest BDO High Street Sales Tracker, total like-for-like (LFL) sales fell 10.19% for the week ending 5 April 2026.

Homewares total LFLs were down by -8.03%, from a very strong base of +21.67% for the same week last year.

Store homewares sales fell by -10.80% this week, from a positive base of +9.23% for the same week last year. Non-store homewares sales grew by +5.05% this week, from a negative base of -13.47% last year.

Total store LFL sales edged down by -0.24%, from a positive base of +4.05% for the same week last year. Total non-store LFL sales saw the largest contraction since 2025, falling by -13.53%, from a positive base of +2.78% for the same week last year.

Commenting on the results, BDO said: “For the third week in a row sales fell across stores, non-store, and all retail categories.

“The UK experienced a week of dry spells, sunshine, and some light rain and showers with daytime temperatures generally close to average for the time of year.

“Storm Dave brought heavy rain and disruption to parts of the country over the Easter weekend.”

Overall footfall fell by -1.8% this week, led retail parks footfall (-3.4%) and high street footfall (-2.3%), while shopping centre footfall increased by +0.6%.
