Dreamland celebrates 50 years

Mike Brown, owner of Dreamland Bedding, reflects on the company’s 50th anniversary milestone and what’s next for the business and his own future.

Last month marked an historic milestone for Brierley Hill-based Dreamland Bedding Centre, as the business celebrated five decades of trading. Over that time, the company has enjoyed many memorable moments, challenges and significant achievements.

Dreamland’s inception was founded upon years of graft and experience, with Mike building his industry knowledge working for a gentleman named Bill Jones where he held the position of Regional Manager. And it was those years that set the wheels in motion. “They gave me an invaluable understanding of the trade, from customer service and product knowledge to the operational side of running a successful retail business,” Mike explained.

“More importantly, they instilled in me a genuine appreciation for quality furniture and the importance of building long-standing relationships with customers. In the mid-1970s, when Bill decided to retire, I was offered the opportunity to purchase one of his businesses. It was a pivotal moment in my career and one I embraced wholeheartedly. Having developed a deep understanding of the industry and a passion for the business, I recognised the opportunity to create something with long-term potential and strong family values at its core.”

At the time, the development of the Merry Hill Centre was beginning to transform the surrounding area, and Mike saw significant promise in Brierley Hill as a location. “Its growing commercial importance and strong local community made it the ideal place to establish and grow the business. Starting from relatively modest beginnings, we opened with just six beds on display, a far cry from the scale of the showroom today.”

Over the decades, the business has continually evolved and expanded in response to customer demand and changing trends within the industry, gradually increasing the footprint of the premises, allowing the company to broaden both the range of products and the overall customer experience. “Today, our showroom proudly displays more than 100 beds, alongside a carefully curated selection of bedroom furniture and sleep products designed to cater to a wide range of tastes, styles, and budgets,” Mike continued.

Despite this growth, the ethos of the business has remained unchanged. “We have always prioritised quality, personal service and expert knowledge, ensuring that customers receive not only excellent products but also trustworthy advice and a welcoming experience. What began as a small independent business has grown into a well-established and respected name within the region, built on decades of hard work, customer loyalty and a genuine passion for helping people create comfortable homes.”

Over the past five decades, there have been many memorable moments and milestones that have shaped the journey of the business, but one of the most significant and emotional achievements for Mike was winning the National Bed Federation (NBF) Small Retailer Award in 2024. “While business success is often measured financially, this recognition meant far more than simply turnover or profitability.

“It represented acknowledgement from within the industry for the values, hard work and commitment that have defined the business over the years. We have always tried to go beyond simply selling products, focusing instead on customer care, staff development, community involvement and maintaining the highest standards possible in everything we do. To have those efforts recognised on a national level was incredibly rewarding.

“Receiving the award genuinely felt like a pinnacle moment in my career. It was not only recognition of the business itself, but also of the people behind it, the staff, suppliers, customers and wider community who have all contributed to our success over the years. The emotion of the occasion completely overwhelmed me, and I was moved to tears when we won. It was a moment of immense pride and reflection, particularly when considering the journey from our modest beginnings to receiving such a prestigious industry accolade.”

Fast-forward to today, Mike and the Dreamland team have been busy celebrating another pinnacle moment – 50 years! To mark the occasion, the company has involved the community with a number of initiatives, as well as recognising the lifeblood of the business – its staff. “Our 50th anniversary is a milestone that represents not only five decades of trading, but also five decades of support from our customers, suppliers, staff and the wider local community,” Mike said.

“Reaching this point has given us an opportunity to reflect on the journey of the business and, most importantly, to give something meaningful back to the community that has supported us throughout the years. Community involvement has always been at the heart of what we do, but to commemorate this landmark anniversary we made a conscious decision to significantly expand our charitable efforts throughout the year, creating positive experiences and lasting support for local families and charities.

“Our anniversary initiatives began with taking 20 children to the pantomime, helping to create special memories for families who may otherwise not have had the opportunity. We also facilitated a picnic event for families affected by bereavement, offering a supportive and uplifting environment for those facing difficult circumstances. In addition, we sponsored an All-Stars charity football match and organised a Halloween fundraising event, both aimed at raising valuable funds for local charitable causes.”

Further community projects have included funding the local Tree of Light remembrance initiative, donating furniture to a local charity and participating in a charity duck race, as well as launching an Easter egg appeal, where many of its suppliers, customers and members of the local community generously contributed Easter eggs for Dreamland’s supporting charities. The business also launched a special giveaway in partnership with bed manufacturer Sealy UK.

“To further commemorate the occasion, we partnered with one of our long-standing and highly valued suppliers, Sealy, who are themselves celebrating 50 years in the UK market,” Mike added. “Together, we felt it was a fitting collaboration for such a significant anniversary. As part of the celebrations, we are giving customers the opportunity to win a Sealy Edison bed. It has been a wonderful way to celebrate not only our own history, but also the long-standing partnerships and relationships that have contributed to our success over the years.

“We also held a celebration with our staff to recognise the hard work and loyalty that have helped shape the business over the decades. It was a proud and emotional occasion, with plenty of champagne flowing as we reflected on how far the business has come. That celebration then inspired us to extend the occasion to our customers and suppliers throughout the month, as we felt it was important that everyone who has contributed to our success should share in the milestone. As a result, every visitor to the showroom has been invited to celebrate with us and enjoy a glass of champagne during their visit.”

Mike made no secret on the real key behind its success. The people. “Reaching a 50-year milestone is an incredibly proud and rewarding achievement. Without question, one of the biggest factors behind our ongoing success has been having the right people around us. I have always believed that a business is only as strong as the team behind it, and we have been fortunate to employ genuinely dedicated and hardworking staff. Developing those individuals, helping them grow, and building a strong team culture has been absolutely fundamental to the success of the business.

“We place a significant emphasis on training and bringing skills in-house, ensuring that our team members are knowledgeable, confident and able to deliver the highest possible level of customer service. Over the years, we have supported multiple staff members through apprenticeships, investing not only in their futures but also in the long-term future of the business itself. We strongly believe that continuous learning and professional development are essential, particularly within an industry that is constantly evolving.”

In Dreamland’s more recent history, Mike said that the last 12 months has been “very positive”, with overall bottom line remaining “healthy”, a testament to the business’ ability to adapt to changing consumer needs, market conditions and trends. With the latter mind, Mike revealed an encouraging movement within the industry. “There is a growing sense of collaboration between independent retailers.

“Historically, many businesses operated far more independently and competitively, whereas today there is a much stronger culture of sharing ideas, experiences and knowledge. Independent stores are communicating with one another more openly than ever before, supporting each other and recognising the value of working collectively within an increasingly challenging retail environment.

“There is also a noticeable emergence of younger people entering the industry, which is incredibly positive for the future of the trade. Fresh perspectives, new ideas, and modern approaches to retail are helping to bring renewed energy into the sector. Of course, compared to myself, most people seem youthful these days, but it is genuinely encouraging to see the next generation becoming passionate about the industry and helping to drive it forward.

“What has been particularly refreshing is the sense of community that now exists among independent retailers, even those located many miles apart. A perfect example of this was the support we received from Linthorpe Beds during our Easter egg charity drive. Despite being located almost 200 miles away, they generously contributed to the initiative, demonstrating the goodwill and camaraderie that increasingly defines the industry today.”

Looking ahead, after achieving a personal ambition of the 50-year milestone, Mike revealed that the time is right to begin his next chapter. “One of the most important developments for the future is that I have found someone who I believe is the perfect fit to take Dreamland forward.

“For me, it was essential to find an individual who also shared the same ethos, values, and approach that have been at the heart of the company for the past five decades. Finding someone with a genuine passion for industry was incredibly important, and I am delighted to say I truly believe the business will be in excellent hands moving forward.

“That gives me a tremendous sense of confidence and satisfaction, because while the business has always been a huge part of my life, I have always wanted to ensure its future remained secure and true to the principles it was built upon. Knowing that continuity is in place makes stepping back feel much easier and far more rewarding.

“Personally, after many years of dedication to the business, I am looking forward to enjoying a slightly slower pace of life. Travel is certainly high on the agenda, and I intend to spend more time enjoying holidays and seeing more of the world. I am also very much looking forward to following my horse racing interests and enjoying the opportunities that retirement can bring after such a long career in retail.

“That said, retiring certainly does not mean slowing down completely. Charity work remains incredibly important to me, and I fully intend to continue supporting local causes and community initiatives wherever possible. Giving back to the community has always been a major part of both the business and my personal values, and I hope to dedicate even more time to those efforts in the years ahead.”
