Furniture retail sales delivered its best month of 2025 during December, with the year also showing growth overall. We explored the latest data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) further.
According to ONS data, furniture and lighting retail sales rose 13.9% to £1.64bn in December 2025 from £1.43bn in November. Compared to the previous year, sales were up 10.1% from £1.48bn. Meanwhile, floorcovering retail sales decreased month-on-month, down by 33% to £163m from £243.5m. Compared to the same time last year, sales fell by 29.8% from £232.3m.
Starting with the furniture sector, analysing 2025, December was the highest month of sales in the year and was the first time furniture sales surpassed £1.6bn since March 2023. Overall, total furniture and lighting retail sales for 2025 resulted at £15.9bn, up 7.4% from £14.8bn in 2024. The figure was still lower than that of £16.7bn recorded in 2023, but third highest sales rate in the last six years.
For flooring, total retail sales in 2025 reached £2.82bn, slightly down by 1.7% from £2.87bn in 2024. December’s decline, as stated above, was the lowest figure during the year and only the second time sales fell below £200m – where August saw sales result at £193.5m. The highest sales month was in March with sales at £307.3m. In fact, this particular month is also the highest recorded month of sales over the last six years, with no other month in that time breaking beyond £300m.
