Suffolk independent to cease trading and enter administration

Independent home furnishings retailer Barretts of Woodbridge has confirmed it will cease trading.

Barretts, which originally started in 1969, is situated at 40 Thoroughfare in Woodbridge, Suffolk, said that it will close on Thursday 7 May 2026 with the business set to enter administration.

A statement from current owner Jill Barrett said: “Back in 1969 my mum and dad took a big leap and, with a lot of help from their friend and investor Charles Gill, opened the doors to a fabulous home furnishings store in the heart of the bustling town of Woodbridge.

“Over the years, customers became friends, and colleagues became like family to Ann and Jack Barrett, then my uncle and aunt Ray and Paddy Morley and, 17 years ago my husband Michael and myself.

“Whilst the history and beauty of Woodbridge has remained the same, shopping habits have undoubtedly changed. Out of town retail parks have made shopping easy and attractive, and on-line shopping continues to dominate the market.

“As result, Barretts sales have not kept up with rising costs which have soared in recent years e.g. energy and fuel costs, minimum wage, National Insurance, staff pensions, and business rates.  This has led to the unfortunate position we are now in.

“We have thoroughly enjoyed running Barretts, and we would like to thank the local community and our friends and colleagues who have been a constant support to us. All have been brilliant and you have our deepest gratitude.  It would be wrong to mention anyone specifically, but to all those who helped to make Barretts special we will always remember you.

“The vast majority of our customer orders have been arranged or settled – there are a few still awaiting delivery dates and we will be in touch to organise this. In the meantime, please do let us know if you have any concerns or questions.”
