Sofa store impacted by car park fire

Sofa retailer Sofa Superstore has temporarily closed after a car park fire spread to its shop in Ashton-under-Lyne.

The incident took place around 3pm on Saturday 11 July 2026 after a van and a lorry caught fire in a car park on Oldham Road.

Five fire engines from Oldham, Hollins, Withington, Hyde and Chadderton, along with an aerial appliance from Manchester Central, attended the scene.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “On arrival, firefighters discovered a large goods vehicle and a transit van well alight in the car park of a retail complex, with fire damage affecting part of a commercial property.

“Crews wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels to tackle the fire and carried out searches of the affected premises. All staff and customers were safely evacuated and no casualties were reported.”

A statement from the business added: “Due to the recent incident involving the car park, our store will be closed for approximately two days.

“We apologies for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.

“We will keep you updated with any further developments and will confirm our reopening as soon as possible.”
